Local high schoolers to compete in Art and Academic Challenge
BRISTOL — High school juniors and seniors from around the region will compete Saturday at Tunxis Community College in various disciplines.
The school’s second annual Art and Academic Challenge will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Tunxis.
More than 100 students from 22 schools will compete in 18 different categories, according to Melissa Lamar, a campus spokeswoman.
Participating schools include Bristol Central High School, Bristol Eastern High School, St. Paul Catholic High School, Farmington High School, New Britain High School, Plainville High School, Miss Porter’s School and Simsbury High School.
Students, who are entered through their school by a teacher, coach or principal, will compete through testing, Jeopardy-style contests and by having judges review their work.
Categories include art, computer science, current events and history, math, music, still and video photography, public speaking and theater, science, reading comprehension and writing.
Medals will be awarded in each category, for first, second and third place.
Competitions will take place in various rooms on campus and vocal and instrumental music competitions will be held in a Tunxis outpost, the Farmington House at 258 Scott Swamp Road.
The event is free and open to the public and will coincide with a fall festival and jewelry and craft sale in the courtyard.
An award ceremony will be held at 1:45 p.m. in the courtyard of the main campus, though if the weather is poor, it will be held inside in the cyber café.
According to Lamar, it is possible that other locations could be changed because of weather. If that happens, signs will be posted to alert participants and anyone else who is attending.
